I am Chair of Directors UK, the professional association of UK screen directors, with just under 7000 members - the majority of working TV and film directors in the UK. The organisation is both a collective management organisation for distributing secondary rights payments and royalties to directors, and a campaigning body seeking to protect and enhance the creative, economic and contractual rights of directors and giving directors a powerful and united voice at the centre of the industry. We provide a range of services to our members including campaigning and lobbying, commercial negotiations, legal advice, events, training and career development.

In addition to directing, I have also produced and executive produced shows.  I have considerable boardroom experience as a non-executive director and Chair of Directors UK.  In 2010 I became a BAFTA Youth Mentor and volunteer as a ambassador for the Public Service Broadcasting Trust advising on Fixers - a charity helping young people.  I also work closely with the BAFTA albert Consortium, as an albert ambassador helping guide productions through the albert certification process, an environmental management system that everyone working in the media is being encouraged to adopt.

Dr Who.jpg

Television has been a major part of my life since visiting the set of Dr Who as a child and watching John Pertwee battle giant spiders before regenerating into Tom Baker. From that moment I was hooked and knew I wanted to be a TV director.

My first BBC job was as a 16 year-old runner in film despatch during my school holidays. I spent my lunch hours and evenings touring the studios watching shows being made and learning as much as I could.

In my late teens, whilst training as an apprentice film editor at the National Coal Board Film Unit, I also formed a pressure group with two school friends, campaigning for more youth programmes on TV. We made our first programme for the Something Else strand on BBC Two in 1981. This led to us being one of the youngest teams to be commissioned, aged just 21, to produce Ear To The Ground - a youth series for the newly formed Channel Four.

In 1984 I moved to Manchester, working first for the BBC where I got an opportunity to become a studio director, cutting my teeth on live Saturday morning children’s programmes. I then worked as a director in the entertainment department at Granada TV. I now work as a freelance director and I've directed programmes for all major British broadcasters and independent production companies as well as Comedy Central in the US.
